Accelerated-Reader

ACCELERATED READER

AR is the computer program at SCA that we use to help teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.  SCA has access to find all books that have AR quizzes written for them.  AR assigns a book level and points to each book.  The book level is assigned by how difficult the text is to read (for example, a book assigned a 5.3 level is a book that should be able to be read by a 5th grader in the 3rd month of school).  The points are assigned by how many words are in the book (i.e. books with less words are assigned lower points).

Students begin by taking a STAR test that indicates your child’s reading level and a reading range within which he/she should read.  From these results, your child’s teacher assigns your child a reading range.  When your child picks a book to read for AR, he/she should pick within that reading range.  This ensures that your child is reading books that are not too easy and not too hard.  Also, the teacher sets goals for book level, points earned, and percentage correct.  From these goals, your child will pick books to read that are within his/her reading range.  When finished reading, he/she takes a computer quiz on the book.  AR gives both your child(ren) and the teacher feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help monitor your child(ren)’s ongoing reading practice.

Books in the SCA libraries that have AR quizzes have color-coded dots on the spine.  The book level and points assigned to that book are also on the dot level.  This helps your child(ren) to more easily find books within their range.
